General Facts and notes for the file

1.    Fr Terry died 1864 before the St Joseph Church was built at Careel Bay.

2. St Joseph’s Church at Careel Bay (the Shed) was built about 1875. Reference “A Seed That Grew”, on the corner of Patrick & Joseph Sts.

3. The Shed was moved to Narrabeen on 6/12/1917 by Fr (Michael/Tom?) Farrell P.P. of Dee Why Parish.

4. Fr Amiel Joseph Sobb born 25/08/1905 at Copeton NSW, south of Inverell and registered nearby at Tingha, died on 6/11/1982 at Narrabeen.(link to Manly Daily report) A Chaplain with the rank of Captain in the WW2 and this was able to attracted a tax deduction for any donation made to the church. According to Fr Sobb’s Service Records, he joined voluntarily and was posted to the 37/52 Armoured Regiment, which was incorporated at different times into the 5 & 9 Divisions in 1942. He saw action in Rebaul, Milne Bay, Lae, Madang, Wewak, Bougainville and many other fields of war in Papua New Guinea.

5. Early masses were said at North Palm Beach Surf Club, later at the Palm Beach RSL, Avalon Surf Club, a house at 35 Central Rd Avalon owned by Jack & Connie Busby at various times.

6. The Sacred Heart church at Mona Vale was built in 1939 and St Joseph’s Narrabeen commenced in 1938.

7. In 1946 the new parish of Narrabeen was formed
